Multiwalled carbon nanotubes ( MWNTs) were prepared by DCarc dischargein hydrogen gas, and werethermally purified byinfrared radiation in air. The morphology of pristineand purified MWNTs was observed by scanning electron microscope ( SEM) , and the crys tallinestructureand perfection wereinvestigated by high resolution transmission electron mi croscope( HRTEM) and Raman spectrometer. Itcameto the conclusion thatthese MWNTs possessed a high degreeof graphitization and very narrow centralchannel(about1 0 nm indiameter) , giving risetotheappearanceof breathing modesfor MWNTs.

STRUCTURE AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF Fe/Pd COMPOSITIONALLY MODULATED FILMS

Metal Fe/Pd compositionally modulated films(CMFs) were prepared by vapour depo- sition from two sources onto glass substrate under vacuum.The modulation and crystal structures of the films were examined by X-ray diffraction.The magnetic properties were determined by vibrating sample magnetometer.The Pd layers in the Fe/Pd CMFs are of fcc structure,and the Fe layer structure transits from bcc into amorphous,state with decreasing thickness of Fe layer.The dependence of specific saturation magnetization on thickness of Fe layers has also been discussed.

Snap-acting two way shape memory device can be obtained by using the design proposed by authors.Some essential parameters which characterize the properties of device have been pro- posed also in this paper.And the principle and method according to which a practical snap-acting device can be designed have been described.

The successive alteration o the microstructure from the weld metal zone through weld bond to the heat affected zone of a Cr18Ni13 austenitic-0.45%C steels weld joint was observed in situ using transmission electron microscopy.It was found a new type of microstructure called pearlite-like structure and observed the characteristics of the boundary of dissimilar phases. Based on the definition of various zones of the dissimilar steels weld joint under the optical mi- croscope,the transmission electron microscopic characteristics,including microstructures and compositions,of each zone are described and discussed.
