The silicon pickup of interstitialfree steel (IF steel) from resin bonded MgOSiC refractories is studied via a medium frequency induction furnace. Samples of IF steel were heated in MgOSiC crucibles with mould flux cover at 1 600 ℃ for 180 min. The silicon contents of IF steel samples taken from the molten steel in every 30 min were examined and the refractories after heating were investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The silicon content of steel rapidly increased in the first 90 min of heating, and then decreased because of the formation of liquid layer on the refractory. Liquid layer separated the liquid steel from the bulk refractory and stopped the pickup of silicon. At the same time, desilication via oxygen through the liquid layer and flux started to reduce the silicon content of the liquid steel.

Al2O3-SiC composite was synthesized with pyrophyllite and natural graphite as raw materials by carbothermal reduction reaction under argon atmosphere. The effect of synthesis temperature on phase composition and microstructure was investigated. Low-carbon MgO-C refractories were prepared by using the synthesized Al2O3-SiC composite as additive. The effect of its addition on the slag penetration and corrosion resistance as well as oxidation resistance of the refractories was investigated, and the slag resistance and oxidation resistance mechanisms of the Al2O3-SiC composite were also discussed. The results show that the synthesis temperature has a great influence on preparation of Al2O3-SiC composite. The Al2O3-SiC composite can be synthesized at 1873-1973 K under argon atmosphere, with pyrophyllite and natural graphite as raw materials, and particle sizes of the composite synthesized at 1973 K are mainly distributed as 1-2 μm. The slag penetration and corrosion resistance of low-carbon MgO-C refractories can be remarkably improved by adding the synthesized Al2O3-SiC composite, and the oxidation resistance has an improvement to some extent. The increase of slag viscosity and the formation of MgAl2O4 can effectively inhibit the slag penetration and corrosion for the refractories.

The SiC_w/Al composite prepared by squeeze casting has a combination of superior room temperature specific strength and modulus together with excellent thermal properties.The extrusion can make an improvement on the strength and ductility of the composite from 582 MPa as squeeze casted up to 639 MPa,and on the transformation from isotropic to the anisotropic structure.This seems to be explained by the orientation of whiskers and the densification of dislocations in matrix.TEM observation indicates that the stacking fault is the usual planar defect on the SiC_w surface. composite;;SiC whisker;;Al alloy;;microstructure
