This paper demonstrates that plasticity enhancement processes previously observed in bcc metals and associated with the presence of surface films and precipitates or dispersoids are operative in or- dered intermetallic compounds.' Some specific results are given for NiAl-and MoSi_2-based materials.The plasticity of NiAl and related B2 ordered alloys at room temperature during monotonic deformation can be enhanced by application of surface films such as electroless nickel platings.Sig- nificant effects are also observed during cyclic deformation.The presence of ductile second phases such as fcc γ or the ordered phase γ' introduced by alloying also enhances the plasticity of NiAl. MoSi_2 exhibits similar effects of surface films and second phases,but primarily at elevated tempera- tures,T>900℃.In this paper,we illustrate the effects of ZrO_2 surface films deposited near room temperature and TiC particulate additions introduced by powder processing techniques.In all cases, the plasticity enhancement is associated with enhanced dislocation generation processes under the conditions of constrained deformation at the film-substrate or precipitate/dispersoid-matrix inter- face of the composite system.

Secondary M,C precipitation was investigated in K40S cobalt-base alloy after 100 h aging at 950 degreesC. The results showed that it was closely related to the tungsten-rich zones inherited from the as-cast condition and the degeneration of the primary M7C3 carbide. A direct element reaction, 6M + C --> M6C, in which C comes from the decomposition of the M7C3 carbides, is suggested as the mechanism of secondary M6C precipitation in K40S alloy. 在170,190,210,230,250℃的温度下,采用3.7×10~2,7.4×10~2和1.1×10~(-1)min(-1)的应变速率(平均)对Zn-5%Al共晶合金的m-C-δ(或m-k-δ)关系曲线(简称m-δ关系曲线)进行了测定.所有的曲线均随应变的δ增加而快速上升.俟达到某一定的应变量(极限应变量δ1)后。开始缓慢下降并保持平稳直至断裂.Zn-5%A1共晶合金的m-δ关系曲线不存在k_(?)=k_I(k_(I 1),k_(I 2),k_(I 3),……)=k_F(或C_0=C_I(C_(I 1),C_(I 2),C_(I 3),……)=C_F=1)的简单情况.可应用m-δ方程式[4,5]对曲线上各点C值(包括所有的C_I和C_F值)进行计算.C值随δ值的增加成近似的直线上升.直线的斜率在极限应变(δ1)处突然减小.

The effects of stress components on nucleation sites and propagation directions of stress cor- rosion cracks in brass were investigated with specimens under mode Ⅱ and mode Ⅲ loadings. The results indicated that under mode Ⅱ loading,stress corrosion cracks nucleated on the site with maximum normal stress component and propagated along the plane perpendieular to the maximum normal stress,under mode Ⅲ loading,the stress corrosion crack was not evident on the 45°plane due to the general corrosion in aqueous solution with high NH_4OH concentra- tion,while stress corroded in aqueous solution with low NH_4OH concentration, numerous cracks with spacings of 10—150μm were found on the 45°plane with maximum normal stress and no stress corrosion cracks was observed on the plane with maximum shear stress.

Based on the local equilibrium assumption, coarsening behavior of M23C6 carbide at 700℃ in H13 steel was simulated by DICTRA software. The results from the calculations were compared with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The results show the interfacial energy for M23C6 in H13 steel at 700℃ is thus probably 0.7 J•m-2, which fits the experiments well. The influence of composition and temperature on the coarsening rate was also investigated by simulations. Simulations show a decrease in the coarsening rate when V/Mo ratio is increased, while the coarsening rate increases with increasing temperature.

Samples with composition R2Fe14M3 (M = Ga and Si; R = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm) have been prepared by are-melting. Crystal-structure studies have shown that the prepared samples are single phase with the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 and/or the hexagonal Th2Ni17 structure. Substitution of Ga for Fe in R2Fe17 leads to an increase of the unit-cell volume, whereas Si substitution reduces the unit-cell volume. The Curie temperatures of the R2Fe14Ga3 and R2Fe14Si3 compounds are much larger than those of the corresponding R2Fe17 compounds. The Fe moment decreases upon Ga or Si substitution. The compounds R2Fe14Ga3 and R2Fe14Si3 With R = Er and Tm exhibit a spin-reorientation transition at low temperature. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Corrosion research by Atrens and co-workers has made significant contributions to the understanding of the service performance of engineering materials. This includes: (1) elucidated corrosion mechanisms of Mg alloys, stainless steels and Cu alloys, (2) developed an improved understanding of passivity in stainless steels and binary alloys such as Fe-Cr, Ni-Cr, Co-Cr, Fe-Ti, and Fe-Si, (3) developed an improved understanding of the melt spinning of Cu alloys, and (4) elucidated mechanisms of environment assisted fracture (EAF) of steels and Zr alloys. This paper summarises contributions in the following: (1) intergranular stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steels, (2) atmospheric corrosion and patination of Cu, (3) corrosion of Mg alloys, and (4) transgranular stress corrosion cracking of rock bolts.

Quantitative analysis of populations having a geometric structure,which has developed into a special scientific subject called microstructology or stereology,is of great importance to the characterization and evaluation of microstructures and their evolution in various processes.This paper, besides a brief discussion on those topics such as the recent developments of computer assisted image analysis,mathematical morphology,and fractal analysis,will mainly focus on the scope,fundamen- tals,present status,and perspectives of classical stereology.Several case examples of its application to materials science will also be given.
