Several concepts of the grain refinement mechanism of B on hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys have been adopted: the refining effect of B on the alpha-Al and eutectic Si with the different additions of Al-B master alloys made at 850 degrees C was investigated, and the Al-B master alloys formed under different temperature conditions have been studied to explore the morphologies of AlB2 particles, slowly cooled sample with addition of Al-B was made to explore the refinement mechanism. Al-B master alloy can refine not only alpha-Al, but eutectic Si. Theoretical analysis indicates that, although AlB2 does not take part directly in the nucleation process in pure Al in the presence of Si, it provides a substrate for precipitation of a small content of Si from which alpha-Al will grow without any undercooling. When the temperature decreases to eutectic line, AlB2 subsequently nucleates eutectic Si, AlB2 particles appear in two different morphologies, namely, hexagonal platelet and tetradehedron morphology which depend on the processing temperature conditions.

High purity silicon carbide (SiC) powder was synthesized in-situ by chemical reaction between silicon and carbon powder. In order to ensure that the impurity concentration of the resulting SiC powder is suitable for high-resistivity SiC single crystal growth, the preparation technology of SiC powder is different from that of SiC ceramic. The influence of the shape and size of carbon particles on the morphology and phase composition of the obtained SiC powder were discussed. The phase composition and morphology of the products were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman microspectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the composition of resulting SiC by in-situ synthesis from Si/C mixture strongly depends on the nature of the carbon source, which corresponds to the particle size and shape, as well as the preparation temperature. In the experimental conditions, flake graphite is more suitable for the synthesis of SiC powder than activated carbon because of its relatively smaller particle size and flake shape, which make the conversion more complete. The major phase composition of the full conversion products is β-SiC, with traces of α-SiC. Glow discharge mass spectroscopy measurements indicated that SiC powder synthesized with this chemical reaction method can meet the purity demand for the growth of high-resistivity SiC single crystals.

Crystal structure of γ-Li_xFe_2O_3,inserted Li electrochemically,was studied by Moss- bauer spectroscopy together with X-ray diffraction,XPS and electrochemical method,On the insertion of Li at low current density,the crystal structure is keeping original spinel; while at higher current density or by thermal activation,owing to violent movement of Li~+ ions,part of crystal structure transforms into rock type similar to face-centered cubic structure of ferrous oxide.The transition channels during insertion of Li~+ ions and limitation of Li~+ ions inserted were discussed.
