Corrosion Resistance of High Performance Weathering Steel for Bridge Building Applications

The mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and microstructures of high performance steel (HPS) was investigated by tensile testing machine, Charpy V-Notch (CVN) testing machine, cyclic immersion corrosion tester, XRD, optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA). The results showed that significant differences existed in the tensile strength, yield strength and impact toughness between HPS and PCS. After 72 h cyclic immersion accelerated corrosion test, the inner rust layer on HPS was composed of α-FeOOH phase and denser than that on PCS that was a mixture of α-FeOOH and Fe3O4. The rust formed on HPS provides better protection and HPS has lower corrosion rates than PCS. Copper and chromium in HPS enrich in the rust layer and enhance the compactness of the rust layer. Based on the results of the accelerated corrosion tests and rust layer analysis, the roles of Cu and Cr against corrosion are discussed, providing HPS with chemical specification which has been industrially successful to produce weathering steel for bridge structure.

Effects of Rolling Processes on Yield Ratio and Formability of Hot Rolled Gas Cylinder Steel

Deep drawing properties of hot rolled gas cylinder steel was investigated by using HP295 steel in terms of microstructure, texture, yield ratio, plastic strain ratio (r-value) and plastic anisotropy (Δr). The grains in the hot strip were largely equiaxed, and the texture was weak, containing α- and γ-fibre. Reheating temperature, finish rolling temperature and cooling rate after rolling influenced the ferrite-pearlite band formation significantly, and the yield ratio increased steeply with decreasing coiling temperature below 630 ℃. The anisotropy is relatively high due to retained severe ferrite-pearlite band. A mechanism of the band formation due to manganese segregation is elaborated and confirmed validly, from which the measures to avoid the band formation are worked out. Rolling parameters have been optimized by the measures, and industrial production of the gas cylinder steel has been made possible with much improved r-and Δr-values, while meeting other specifications.

Evolution of microstructure and mechanical property during long-term aging in Udimet 720Li

Thermal stabilities of microstructure and mechanical property have been investigated on superalloy U720Li, which is of great interest of application for jet engine and land-based turbine disc. The results showed that, the primary and secondary gamma' particles maintain good thermal stability at 650 and 700 degreesC with aging time up to 3000 h, while the tertiary gamma' is apparently dependent on aging temperature and time. The tertiary gamma' particles undergo a procedure of coarsening, dissolution and eventually complete disappearance with the increasing of aging time and temperature. They exhibit unusual high sensibility upon aging temperature, which is attributed to the lattice misfit between the gamma' precipitates and the matrix in the alloy. The grain boundary phase M23C6 remains stable without forming of sigma phase even with aging time up to 3000 h at 700 degreesC. Microhardness decreases apparently with increasing aging time and aging temperature. Theoretical analysis based on dislocation mechanism indicates that the change of microhardness should be attributed to the evolution of the tertiary gamma' during aging.

Longitudinal magnetotransport in long-period semiconductor superlattices

Longitudinal electron transport is investigated for a long-period semiconductor superlattice in the presence of a magnetic field applied along the growth direction of the superlattice. It is shown that the longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibits a complicated dependence on the magnetic-field strength. In contrast with the conventional Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, the magnetoresistance shows periodic oscillations only in the region of low reciprocal magnetic field.

The present status of NRIM Creep Data Sheet Project and the recent activities of long-term creep and rupture studies on heat resisting steels are described. The project has been continued to produce long-term data such as 100 000h-creep rupture strength for 47 kinds of principal heat resisting steels and alloys, including welded joints. The long-term creep deformation behavior and microstructural evolution during creep have been shown to be complicated.

THRESHOLD OF SHORT FATIGUE CRACK FOR Al-Li ALLOY 8090

Threshold of fatigue for short through cracks for Al-Li alloy 8090 was evaluated to be lower than that of long cracks,and to decrease with the shortening of the crack length.The correla- tion among the threshold,crack wake,and crack tip shielding of the short fatigue cracks was discussed.The super demarcation length and lowest theoretical threshold of short through fa- tigue cracks were presented.

ADSORPTION OF LI ON Mo(110) SURFACE: A FIRST-PRINCIPLES STUDY

Periodic, self-consistent, density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate Li adsorption on Mo(110) surface. It turns out that the long-bridge site is the most stable site and the Li-Mo surface alloy forms easily at high coverage with the substitution of Mo by Li atoms in the outermost layer. Work function analysis showed that the work function decreases dramatically as the coverage from 0 to 0.5 ML, and finally increases again at the coverage of 1 ML, which agrees well with the experimental finding of Kroger et al. (Surf. Sci. 449 (2000) 227-235). Vibrational properties, diffusion barrier of Li along the Mo(110) surface, and the energy of formation of the surface have also been investigated for Li adsorption at various coverages.

Twinning in Intermetallic Compounds Are Long Shear Vectors and/or Shuffles Really Necessary?

In this paper the geometric description and general theory of mechanical twinning are reviewed, the twins in general lattices and superlattices are summarized, and the kinetic process by which mechanical twins form is revisited. A case study of mechanical twinning of HfV2+Nb, (cubic) Laves phase, is presented and the synchroshear of selected atomic layers is proposed to explain the physical process of twin formation. If the twins form in this way, then long shear vectors and / or atomicshuffles are not really necessary.
