MEASUREMENT OF K_(IC)OF MEDIAN OR LOW STRENGTH STEEL USING ROUND BARS WITH CIRCUMFERENCIAL CRACK

The size effect of tension round bars with circumferential crack was described and used to measure the plane-strain fracture toughness K_(1c) of median or low strength steel.The size of cylindrical specimen required for K_(1c) measurement is much smaller than that of standard specimen.The J-integral values of the cylindrical sqecimens were calculated to characterize the size effect.The finite element calculution and fracture morphology analysis have been conducted to eyplain the fact that smaller cylindrical specimen could be used to measure K_(1c) of median or low strength steel.

An analytical procedure for rapidly and quantitatively constructing complete pole figures of cubic materials,based on the fundamental equations of the vector method.has been presented. Here.an incompletely measured pole figure can be completed by using its measured data as constraint conditions.It also allows the derivation of any other pole figures.

Introduction to atmospheric corrosion research in China

Complete Composition Tunability of Cu(Ni)-Ti-Zr Alloys

In the Cu-Zr-Ti ternary system, a new composition zone of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) formation was discovered, locating at the 55-57 at. pct Cu, 30-31 at. pct Ti and 13-14 at. pct Zr, and near Cu-Ti binary subsystem rather than the Cu-Zr binary. For these alloys, BMG rods of 2 mm in diameter can be fabricated by using copper mould casting. It is expected that these BMG-forming alloys correlate with (L -> CuTi+Cu(2)TiZr+Cu(51)zr(14)) eutectic reaction that the undercooled melt undergoes during solidification. Adopting "3D pinpointing approach", compositional dependence of glass-forming ability (GFA) in Cu(Ni)-Ti-Zr pseudo ternary system was revisited. Optimized BMG-forming composition is located at Cu(50.4)Ni(5.6)Ti(31)Zr(13), with a critical diameter of 6 mm for complete BMG formation. Its GFA is significantly superior to Vit 101 (Cu(47)Ni(8)Ti(34)Zr(11)) previously developed by Caltech group. The effect that the GFA of the ternary base alloy was improved by substitution of Ni for Cu is attributed to a role of retarding the crystallization of Cu(51)Zr(14) intermetallics.

This paper briefiy introduces the R&D of intermetallics in China. R&D on intermetallics in a national scale in China began near ten years ago. The investigation in past years focused on the fundamental research and materials development. A significant progress has been made. Various components that made of Ti3Al Ni3Al, TiAl and Fe3Al have been successfully manufactured Some of them have been evaluted. It is expected that some intermetallic alloys will be produced in an industrial scale in the near future.

Further development of NdFeB magnet industry in China

Due to continued growth in key markets, a broadening of application base and performance improvements, the market demands of NdFeB magnet increased steadily in 1998, and the global output of sintered NdFeB magnet exceeded 10,000 t, in spite of the economic recession in Asia. In 1998 China produced 3,850 t sintered NdFeB block magnet, with an annual growth rate of +22% over the output in 1997.

The defect structure and EPR parameters for Er3+ in molybdates: a complete energy matrices study

In this paper, we develop a complete energy matrices approach investigating the defect structure and EPR parameters (g(parallel to), g(perpendicular to), A(parallel to) and A(perpendicular to)) for Er3+ in molybdates. In this approach, the crystal-field parameters used in the calculations are determined from the superposition model and the structural data for tetragonal distortion. The local distortion angles Delta theta = -1.628 degrees, Delta theta 1.843 degrees and Delta theta 2.874 degrees are obtained for Er3+ in SrMoO4, PbMoO4 and CaMoO4 crystals, respectively. Moreover, the influence of the orbital reduction factor k and the local distortion angle Delta theta on the EPR parameters is analyzed.

Complete Maps for the Internal Oxidation of Ideal Ternary Alloys Forming Insoluble Oxides under High Oxidant Pressures

This paper presents an analysis of the conditions of stability of the different forms of internal oxidation of ideal ternary A-B-C alloys, where A is the most noble and C the most reactive component, forming insoluble oxide and exposed to high pressures of a single oxidant. The treatment, based on an extension to ternary alloys of Wagner’s criterion for the transition from internal to external oxidation in binary alloys, allows to predict the existence of three different forms of internal oxidation. In fact, in addition to the most common kinds of internal attack, involving the coupled internal oxidation of B+C beneath external AO scales and the internal oxidation of C beneath external BO scales, a third mode, involving the internal oxidation of C beneath external scales composed of mixtures of AO+BO, becomes also possible under special conditions. A combination of the boundary conditions for the existence of these different types of internal oxidation allows to predict three different kinds of complete maps for the internal oxidation in these systems, one of which involves only two modes, while the other two involve all the three possible modes of internal oxidation.
