The distribution of subversive element sulfur in high temperature phases during solidification of cast iron was investigated by means of liquid quenching method and autoradiography.The results show that in grey cast iron,sulfur is concentrated in the liquid,flake graphite and in the peripherial area of D-type supercooled graphite eutectic cells,but less sulfur is in austenite. Besides,the content of sulfur in A-type graphite is higher than that in D-type graphite,and sulfur content in eutectic austenite is a little higher than that in primary austenite.While,in nodular graphite cast iron less sulfur is in liquid and austenite,but more in nodular graphite. The blackness of the spots on the emulsion film corresponds to the atomic percentage of radioactive substances located on the surface of the specimen.

Interference layer metallography was used to identify the phases present in the aluminide coating on superalloy IN738LC. They are: two intermetallic aluminides NiAl and Ni_3Al, y-solid solution and a Cr-rich solid solution, two sulphides M_(23)C_6 and MC, and two sulphides (Al,Cr)_3S_4 and (Cr,Ti)_3S_4. ZnS and ZnSe are proposed to be vapor deposited onto the surface of the specimen to get good colour contrast and good light-dark contrast. The refractive index and absorption coefficient of all these phases have been detemined.

Due to continued growth in key markets, a broadening of application base and performance improvements, the market demands of NdFeB magnet increased steadily in 1998, and the global output of sintered NdFeB magnet exceeded 10,000 t, in spite of the economic recession in Asia. In 1998 China produced 3,850 t sintered NdFeB block magnet, with an annual growth rate of +22% over the output in 1997.

The discovery of the first Fe-based ferromagnetic amorphous alloy in 1966 had made an impact on conventional magnetic materials because of its unique properties. Since then, a number of amorphous magnetic materials have been successfully developed and used in a wide variety of applications. A brief review of R & D activities on amorphous soft magnetic materials in China is given from the beginning to the present in a somewhat chronological order, followed by a brief introduction to their applications on electric and electronic industries. An analysis and a prospect of Chinese market of such amorphous materials are also presented.
