ANALYSIS OF DEPOSITED PRODUCTS AND REANODIZED POROUS LUBRICATING FILM ON A1 AFTER(NH_4)_2MoS_4 SOLUTION TREATMENT

Observation was carried out of the structure of sulphuric,oxalic or phosphoric film on Al after treatment of reanodizing and electrolytic depositing lubricant in (NH_4)_2MoS_4 solution,as well as of the deposited products by means of EMPA,TEM and energy spectro-scopic analysis.The deposited products are mixture of compounds of S and Mo rather than single MoS_2 and most of them dcposited near the surface layer of the film.Some regular long pores without barrier layer occurred in the film,but the regular fine channels without relation to the structural element parameters of original anodized film were found in the thickened barrier layer of phosphoric film.Sulphur may be remained as Mo sulphide in the film during heating under Ar protective environment.

The effects of stress components on nucleation sites and propagation directions of stress cor- rosion cracks in brass were investigated with specimens under mode Ⅱ and mode Ⅲ loadings. The results indicated that under mode Ⅱ loading,stress corrosion cracks nucleated on the site with maximum normal stress component and propagated along the plane perpendieular to the maximum normal stress,under mode Ⅲ loading,the stress corrosion crack was not evident on the 45°plane due to the general corrosion in aqueous solution with high NH_4OH concentra- tion,while stress corroded in aqueous solution with low NH_4OH concentration, numerous cracks with spacings of 10—150μm were found on the 45°plane with maximum normal stress and no stress corrosion cracks was observed on the plane with maximum shear stress.

Improvement of Intergranular Stress Corrosion Crack Susceptibility of Austenite Stainless Steel through Grain Boundary Engineering

Intergranular stress corrosion crack susceptibility of austenite stainless steel was evaluated through threepoint bending test conducted in high temperature water. The experimental results showed that the frequent and efficient introduction of low energy coincidence site lattice boundaries through grain boundary engineering resulted in an apparent improvement of the intergranular stress corrosion crack resistance of austenite stainless steel.

Effect of Surface Treatment and Metallic Coating on Corrosion Behavior and Biocompatibility of Surgical 316L Stainless Steel Implant

Surface engineering technology is a suitable method for coatings on the metal surfaces or performing surface modification treatment, which can improve corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of metals. In this research, corrosion behavior of Nb coating on H2SO4 and HNO3 treated AISI stainless steel 316L (SS) was evaluated. Nb coating was carried out using physical vapor deposition process on the SS. Characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique were used to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coated and treated SS. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions and compared with the pristine SS specimens.
Cyclic polarization tests were performed to evaluate resistivity against pitting. Experimental results indicate that Nb coating and surface treatment of the SS had a positive effect on improvement of corrosion behavior. The decrease in corrosion current densities was significant for coated and treated specimens. The corrosion current density was much lower than the values obtained for pristine specimens.

Effect of Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment on Corrosion Behavior of 316 Stainless Steel

The nanocrystalline microstructure of the surface of 316 stainless steel (316SS) induced by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) was determined by Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The technique of hydrogen embrittlement was first used to obtain the information of the brittleness cleavage plane. The effects of SMAT and the following annealing process on the corrosion behavior of 316SS were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization curves and potentiostatic critical pitting temperature measurements. The results demonstrated that the nanocrystalline layer with an average grain size of 19 nm was produced. However, there were lots of cracks on the surface, which led to the degradation in the corrosion resistance of 316SS after SMAT. Nevertheless, after annealing treatment, the corrosion resistance of the nanocrystalline surface had been improved greatly. The higher the annealing temperature, the better was the corrosion resistance.

Ni-Cr System solar selective thin solid films were prepared by d.c. magnetron reactivesputtering under the atmosphere of O2 and N2. Ni-Cr alloy was chosen as targetmaterial and copper sheets as substrate. Using SEM, Spectrophotometer and Talystepto analyze the relations between the selective characteristic and the structure, theformation and the thickness of the thin films. The aim is to obtain good solar selectivethin films with high absorptance and low emittance, which is applied to flat plate solarheat collectors.

Effect of surface nanocrystallization on corrosion and corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel: Synergistic effect of methionine and iodide ion

The corrosion properties of a nanocrystalline low carbon steel coating (SNCLCS) fabricated on a low carbon steel substrate by magnetron sputtering and the bulk steel (BLCS) were investigated in aerated 0.5M H2SO4 solution by EIS and polarization techniques. The corrosion inhibiting effect of methionine and synergistic KI additives was also studied. The results show that both specimens underwent active corrosion with no transition to passivation in the potential range studied. Sur-face nanocrystallization was observed to increase the corrosion susceptibility of low carbon steel, leading to a decrease in interfacial impedance and an increase in the kinetics of the anodic reaction. Methionine inhibited the corrosion of both specimens with comparable inhibition efficiencies and iodide ions synergistically increased the inhibition efficiency. This synergistic effect was, however, more pronounced for BLCS. This has been discussed vis- -vis the more positive surface charge on BLCS compared to SNCLCS. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
