DESIGN OF A/AD_m-BC_n DIRECTIONAL EUTECTIC COMPOSITES

Design process of A/ADm-BCn type directional eutectic composites was instanced by investigating Al-Mg-Si-Li and Ni-Mo-C-Al systems in this study by thermoanalysis and directional solidification techniques. It was demonstrated that A(D)-BCn eutectic alloys could be obtained more conveniently by using Smith′s thermoanalysis method to trace change of the eutectic Points of A-BCn induced by addition of components D. A/ADm-BCn directional eutectic composites could be produced from directionally solidified A/ADm-BCn alloys after proper heat treatments if components D have higher solid solubility in components A at high temperature and stable of metastable phases ADm could be formed at room temperature.

Ni-Cr System solar selective thin solid films were prepared by d.c. magnetron reactivesputtering under the atmosphere of O2 and N2. Ni-Cr alloy was chosen as targetmaterial and copper sheets as substrate. Using SEM, Spectrophotometer and Talystepto analyze the relations between the selective characteristic and the structure, theformation and the thickness of the thin films. The aim is to obtain good solar selectivethin films with high absorptance and low emittance, which is applied to flat plate solarheat collectors.

The SiC_w/Al composite prepared by squeeze casting has a combination of superior room temperature specific strength and modulus together with excellent thermal properties.The extrusion can make an improvement on the strength and ductility of the composite from 582 MPa as squeeze casted up to 639 MPa,and on the transformation from isotropic to the anisotropic structure.This seems to be explained by the orientation of whiskers and the densification of dislocations in matrix.TEM observation indicates that the stacking fault is the usual planar defect on the SiC_w surface. composite;;SiC whisker;;Al alloy;;microstructure

The effects of stress components on nucleation sites and propagation directions of stress cor- rosion cracks in brass were investigated with specimens under mode Ⅱ and mode Ⅲ loadings. The results indicated that under mode Ⅱ loading,stress corrosion cracks nucleated on the site with maximum normal stress component and propagated along the plane perpendieular to the maximum normal stress,under mode Ⅲ loading,the stress corrosion crack was not evident on the 45°plane due to the general corrosion in aqueous solution with high NH_4OH concentra- tion,while stress corroded in aqueous solution with low NH_4OH concentration, numerous cracks with spacings of 10—150μm were found on the 45°plane with maximum normal stress and no stress corrosion cracks was observed on the plane with maximum shear stress.

The cleavage fracture mechanism of granular bainitie weld metal in 15MnVN steel has been investigated.SEM observation of a special specimen for revealing simultaneously fracture sur- face and microstructure shows that the cleavage of the weld is initiated by M-A constituent. The 95th percentile equivalent diameter of M-A constituent controls the cleavage fracture stress of the weld metal.

Probing the structural and electronic properties of lanthanide-metal-doped silicon clusters: M@Si(6) (M = Pr, Gd, Ho)

Density functional calculations are performed to investigate the electronic and structural properties of M@Si(6) (M = Pr, Gd, Ho). Generalized Koopmans' theorem is applied to predict the vertical detachment energies and simulate the photoelectron spectra (PES). Subsequently, a detailed comparison between previously published experimental PES spectra and the present theoretical simulations helps to identify the ground state structures. The most stable M@Si(6)(-) (M = Pr, Gd, Ho) is a three-dimensional structure with the lanthanide-metal atom sitting on top (or bottom) of the regular pentagonal bipyramid. Instead, the neutral species show the impurity as a four-coordinate atom in the equatorial plane of pentagonal bipyramid. Moreover, the nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) is discussed at various points at and over or under the center of the Si(5) ring plane, and the negative NICS values support the aromatic character of the M@Si(6)(-) (M = Pr, Gd, Ho) clusters. AMORPHIZATION IN Nb-M (M=Fe, Co, Ni) BINARY METAL SYSTEMS INDUCED BY ION BEAM ASSISTED DEPOSITION (IBAD)

Ion beam assisted deposition technique (IBAD) was utilized to systematically studyamorphization in binary metal systems of Nb-magnetic element, i.e., Nb-M (M=Fe,Co or Ni). The glass forming range terned as Nb fraction of Nb-Fe system was about34at.% to 56at.%, that of Nb-Co system was about 32at.% to 72at.% and that of Nb-Ni about 20at.% to 80at.%. Similar percolation patterns were found in amorphousalloy films. The fractal dimensions of the percolation patterns approach to 2, whichindicates 2-D layer growth for amorphous phases. It is regarded that the assistedAr+ ion beam duringthe deposition process plays important role for the 2-D layergrowth. Some metastable crystalline phases were obtained in these three systems byIBAD, e.g., bcc supersaturated solid solutions in Nb-Fe and Nb-Co systems, fcc andhcp phases in Nb-Co and Nb-Ni systems. The formation and competing between theamorphous and the metastable crystalline phases were determined by both the phases'thermodynamic states in binary metal systems and kinetics during IBAD process.

Electric current-induced relaxations of conductivity in phase-separated La(0.5)Ca(0.5)Mn(0.95)Fe(0.05)O(3)

The conduction relaxations of polycrystalline La(0.5)Ca(0.5)Mn(0.95)Fe(0.05)O(3) upon imposing rectangle electric current pulses (with minute time scale) are studied in details. We observe clear "overshooting" features of the conduction relaxation at both the front and rear edges of the current pulse so long as the pulse is sufficiently high. The Joule heating effect and the intrinsic stabilization of the ferromagnetic metal phase by the current pulse are linked in understanding our observations, and these effects may be applicable for resistance switching function. Tensile and Impact Properties of Shielded Metal Arc Welded AISI 409M Ferritic Stainless Steel Joints

The present study is concerned with the effect of filler metals such as austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel and duplex stainless steel on tensile and impact properties of the ferritic stainless steel conforming to AISI 409M grade. Rolled plates of 4 mm thickness were used as the base material for preparing single pass butt
welded joints. Tensile and impact properties, microhardness, microstructure and fracture surface morphology of the joints fabricated by austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel and duplex stainless steel filler metals were evaluated and the results were reported. From this investigation, it is found that the joints fabricated by
duplex stainless steel filler metal showed higher tensile strength and hardness compared to the joints fabricated by austenitic and ferritic stainless steel filler metals. Joints fabricated by austenitic stainless steel filler metal exhibited higher ductility and impact toughness compared with the joints fabricated by ferritic stainless steel and duplex stainless steel filler metals.
