A Ti-45at.%Al alloy which was solution-treated at 1350℃ for 30 minutes and quenched in water is employed to explore mechanisms of α_2→γphase transformation. The ageing process of the quenched alloy has been in situ studied it has been found that the γ lamellae can precipitate in the α_2 matrix by two mechanisms. When The alloy is aged at 700℃, the stacking faults pre-existing in the α_2 matrix start to grow and more are generated.With the increase of ageing time and ageing temperature the density of stacking faults is increased and the γ lamellae then precipitate. This isα diffusion-controlled process. Alternatively, the γ lamellae may be formed from the α_2 matrix by 1/3(1100) shearing on the (0001) plane. The latter mechanism implies that the strain-induced transformation may occur, which is confirmed by deformation of the quenched alloy.

Ni-Cr System solar selective thin solid films were prepared by d.c. magnetron reactivesputtering under the atmosphere of O2 and N2. Ni-Cr alloy was chosen as targetmaterial and copper sheets as substrate. Using SEM, Spectrophotometer and Talystepto analyze the relations between the selective characteristic and the structure, theformation and the thickness of the thin films. The aim is to obtain good solar selectivethin films with high absorptance and low emittance, which is applied to flat plate solarheat collectors.

A new parallel Monte Carlo simulation method of secondary electron (SE) and backscattered electron images (BSE) of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for a complex geometric structure has been developed. This paper describes briefly the simulation method and the modification to the conventional sampling method for the step length. Example simulation results have been obtained for several artificial structures.

In order to reveal the effect of grain boundaries (GBs) on cyclic deformation, the cyclically saturated dislocation patterns within grains and in the vicinity of GBs in a copper bicrystal with a large-angle GB and a copper multicrystal containing small-angle GBs have been observed by the electron channelling contrast technique in scanning electron microscopy. The observations for the multicrystal show that dislocation walls and persistent slip bands (PSBs) can transfer through the small-angle GBs. However, in the copper bicrystal with a large-angle GB perpendicular to the stress axis, PSBs can only form within the component grain with a relatively higher Schmid factor and cannot pass through the GB. From the experimental observations, the effect of GBs on cyclic deformation behaviour is discussed.

The microstructure of TiB2-Ti (CN)-Ni ceramics has been investigated by means of transmission and analytical electron microscopy. In many cases, TiB2 and Ti(CN) grew together with a unique orientation relationship. However, Ti(CN) particles were also found to precipitate in TiB2 crystals, and a different orientation relationship between precipitated Ti (CN) particles and TiB2 crystals can be detected. The TiB2/Ti(CN) interface was investigated using high-resolution electron microscopy. During hot-press procession, two Ni-rich intergranular phases with N31Si12 and N16Ti6Si7 type structures and amorphous phase were formed on grain boundaries.

The early stages of the evolution of atmospheric corrosion of carbon steels exposed in both a laboratory simulated and a natural atmosphere environment in Shenyang have been observed by in situ scanning electron microscopy. In the case of laboratory cyclic wet-dry tests, even though the chloride content level is very low, filiform corrosion is initiated in the early stage. The filiform corrosion grows in random directions, forming a network of ridges. White nodules nucleate and grow on the ridges during continued corrosion and eventually connect with each other to form the initial corrosion scale. Pits were also found on the surface beneath corrosion products. In the case of a natural atmospheric environment, both filiform corrosion and other localized corrosion, such as pitting and inter-granular attack take place in the initial stage. It is obvious that there is variety of localized corrosion in the initial stage of atmospheric corrosion. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An in situ ex-environmental transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study was carried out to investigate the oxidation behavior of RESn(3) (RE = Nd, La, Ce) film in a room at 18 +/- 2 degrees C with 20 +/- 5% humidity. The original RESn(3) compounds transformed into RE(OH)(3) nanocrystals and Sn clusters. This involved the selective oxidation of RE in RESn(3) and the atomic diffusion of Sn atoms. The whole oxidation behavior was discussed from the thermodynamic viewpoint, and a reaction formula was proposed to summarize the oxidation of RESn(3) under different ambient conditions.
