DESIGN AND PREPARATION OF SILICON NITRIDE COMPOSITE WITH HIGH FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AND NACRE STRUCTURE

A new way of designing and preparing silicon nitride ceramic composite with high fracture toughness and nacre structure has been proposed. To mimic the laminated structure of nacre, Si_3N_4 matrix ceramic layer can be obtained through compacting rolling method. To mimic the secondary toughening of nacre structure, SiC whisker is added into Si_3N_4 and acts as the secondary toughening phase. Boron nitride (BN)is selected to mimic the organic layer in nacre so as to form the weak interfaces between Si_3N_4 layers. Alumina is added into BN to adjust the bonding strength of the interface.The Si_3N_4 sheets are stacked into the die after coating with BN. After the removal of the organic matter in them, the green body is hot pressed at 1820℃for 1.5 hours under N_2 atmosphere. The fracture toughness of the so-made Si_3N_4 composite at room temperature is 20.36MPa m~(1/2), the three-point bending strength at room temperature is 651.47MPa. The crack spreads and deflects along the interface between BN and Si_3N_4 layer and extends through the BN layer into Si_3N_4 layer. The improvement of the fracture toughness may be due to the staircase-shape-like crack which provides the long crack path, the fracture and deformation of Si_3N_4 layer, and the pullout of SiC whiskers from the Si_3N_4 layer.

Introduction to atmospheric corrosion research in China

The SiC_w/Al composite prepared by squeeze casting has a combination of superior room temperature specific strength and modulus together with excellent thermal properties.The extrusion can make an improvement on the strength and ductility of the composite from 582 MPa as squeeze casted up to 639 MPa,and on the transformation from isotropic to the anisotropic structure.This seems to be explained by the orientation of whiskers and the densification of dislocations in matrix.TEM observation indicates that the stacking fault is the usual planar defect on the SiC_w surface. composite;;SiC whisker;;Al alloy;;microstructure

Ni-Cr System solar selective thin solid films were prepared by d.c. magnetron reactivesputtering under the atmosphere of O2 and N2. Ni-Cr alloy was chosen as targetmaterial and copper sheets as substrate. Using SEM, Spectrophotometer and Talystepto analyze the relations between the selective characteristic and the structure, theformation and the thickness of the thin films. The aim is to obtain good solar selectivethin films with high absorptance and low emittance, which is applied to flat plate solarheat collectors.

Recent developments in high temperature intermetallics research in China

Intermetallics

A comprehensive survey was made of various advances of intermetallics research in China. The investigation focussed on the fundamental research and materials development. Charge density distribution and site occupancy of alloying elements, environmental embrittlement and chemical reaction, interface structures and phase transformation at the atomic scale, nanocrystalline intermetallics and its thermal stability, superplastic behavior and anomalous yield strength peak are reviewed. Several Ti-Al and Ni-Al based alloys have been manufactured, and show good mechanical properties. Diverse components have been fabricated successfully. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Effect of metal grain size on multiple microwave resonances of Fe/TiO(2) metal-semiconductor composite

Applied Physics Letters

The dielectric resonance and multiple magnetic resonances which correspond to multiple microwave absorptions in the 2-18 GHz range have been studied in the composite Fe/TiO(2). The Fe grain size is found to have great impact on the dielectric resonance in this metal-semiconductor composite. The polarization mechanism is attributed to interfacial polarization. The multiple magnetic resonances can be ascribed to the natural resonance and exchange resonances, which can be explained by Aharoni's exchange resonance theory. Technical note: Research and development of localized corrosion rate monitoring instrument for nonpassivable metal in corrosive media

This paper introduces the design of a localized corrosion rate monitoring instrument that can monitor and evaluate the maximum and stable localized corrosion rate of a nonpassivable metal in a corrosive environment by measuring the current density in a corrosion sensor with an occluded anode.
