The γ"precipitate in Inconel 718 Ni-base superalloy has been investigated using TEM. Based on a calculation of diffraction pattern. the orientation relations between precipitates and matrix are given in detail. The influence of solution temperature on growth of γ" precipitates was investigated. and a γ" precipitate free area near δ phase was found. The coarsening behaviour of γ" precipitates during short time aging is discussed

THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE NATIONAL LABORATORIES IN MATERIALS RESEARCH

The role of the National Laboratories is summarized from the era of post World War II to the present time. The U.S. federal government policy for the National Laboratories and its influence on their materials science infrastructure is reviewed with respect to .determining overall research strategies, various initiatives to interact with industry (especially in recent years),building facilities that serve the nation, and developing leading edge research in the materials sciences. Despite reductions in support for research in the U.S. in recent years, and uncertainties regarding the specific policies for Research &Development (R&D) in the U.S., there are strong roles for materials research at the National Laboratories. These roles will be centered on the abilities of the National Laboratories to field multidisciplinary teams, the use of unique cutting edge facilities, a focus on areas of strength within each of the labs,increased teaming and partnerships, and the selection of motivated research areas. It is hoped that such teaming opportunities will include new alliances with China, in a manner similar, perhaps, to those recently achieved between the U.S. and other countries.

Introduction to atmospheric corrosion research in China

Science and Technology of Advanced Materials

In this paper, we introduce the research on atmospheric corrosion in China. We describe the climate characteristics and the classification of atmospheric corrosivity across the whole country. R&D STATUS ON INTERMETALLICS IN CHINA

This paper briefiy introduces the R&D of intermetallics in China. R&D on intermetallics in a national scale in China began near ten years ago. The investigation in past years focused on the fundamental research and materials development. A significant progress has been made. Various components that made of Ti3Al Ni3Al, TiAl and Fe3Al have been successfully manufactured Some of them have been evaluted. It is expected that some intermetallic alloys will be produced in an industrial scale in the near future.

Recent developments in high temperature intermetallics research in China

Intermetallics

A comprehensive survey was made of various advances of intermetallics research in China. The investigation focussed on the fundamental research and materials development. Charge density distribution and site occupancy of alloying elements, environmental embrittlement and chemical reaction, interface structures and phase transformation at the atomic scale, nanocrystalline intermetallics and its thermal stability, superplastic behavior and anomalous yield strength peak are reviewed. Several Ti-Al and Ni-Al based alloys have been manufactured, and show good mechanical properties. Diverse components have been fabricated successfully. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Industrial Research on Broadening of Slab in Continuous Casting Process

The broadening of slab was investigated on the basis of several industrial manufactures of continuous casting. The results show that slab broadening commonly exists in the process of continuous casting. It is found that there are few reports on it until now. In order to find out the reasons of slab broadening, we checked the effect of change of mold size, excepting technological parameters, conditions of soft reduction, and contraction of roll gap on slab broadening. Our examinations exclude the possibility of change of mold size, excepting technological parameters to be the causes of broadening of slab. The broadening of slab probably results from the static pressure of molten steel and the force from driving rolls. At the same time, online observations on three kinds of steel in the process of continuous casting reveal that the average objective ratio of slab broadening ranges from 1.27 % to 3.00 %, and even arrives at 4.4 %. In addition, the width of mold and formulas of calculating the broadening of slab was deduced.

Key R&D activities for development of new types of wrought magnesium alloys in China

Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China

Many researchers in China are actively engaged in the development of new types of wrought magnesium alloys with low cost or with high-performances and novel plastic processing technologies. The research activities are funded primarily through four government-supported programs: the Key Technologies R&D Program of China, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National High-tech R&D Program of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The key R&D activities for the development of new wrought magnesium alloys in China are reviewed, and typical properties of some new alloys are summarized. More attentions are paid to high-strength wrought magnesium alloys and high-plasticity wrought magnesium alloys. Some novel plastic processing technologies, emerging in recent years, which aim to control deformation texture and to improve plasticity and formability especially at room temperature, are also introduced.

The SiC_w/Al composite prepared by squeeze casting has a combination of superior room temperature specific strength and modulus together with excellent thermal properties.The extrusion can make an improvement on the strength and ductility of the composite from 582 MPa as squeeze casted up to 639 MPa,and on the transformation from isotropic to the anisotropic structure.This seems to be explained by the orientation of whiskers and the densification of dislocations in matrix.TEM observation indicates that the stacking fault is the usual planar defect on the SiC_w surface. composite;;SiC whisker;;Al alloy;;microstructure

Gamma titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl)intermetallic compounds are spotlighted as lightweight heat-resistant materials, and have been investigated extensively to aiming commercial use.Fundamental approaches in which phase diagrams of Ti -Al -Cr and TiAl -Nb have been studied based on the experimental data and calculations , have been performed in the national project For industrial approach, ingot process and direct casting process have been developed to provide sheet form of TiAl. By these approaches, γ-TiAl base ,intermetallic compounds show a great possibility to apply in the variety of fields .However, a more detailed understanding of phase equilibrium in Ti-Al -X and the relationship between the mechanical properties and microstructure will be necessary
