Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was modified by intumescent flame retardant (IFR) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT). The synergistic influences of IFR and OMMT on the flammability, mechanical properties of flame-retardant LLDPE were investigated. The flammability and degradation progress of the composites and the obtained charred layers were analyzed by limiting oxygen index (LOI), TGA and SEM. The results show that the addition of OMMT deteriorates the flammability, increases mechanical properties of LLDPE/IFR, and decreases the melt dripping and dense smoke to some extent. When the content of IFR and OMMT is 30phr and 2 % respectively, the LOI value of the system is 25.2 %, and the sample could form compact charred layer after burning.
