Dithionic acid and metal dithionate salts are potentially useful sources of soluble metal ions and electrolytes for electroplating solutions. In the hope of helping innovative formulators contemplating the use of novel electrolytes like dithionic acid, this paper presents a brief summary of some recent developments in dithionate based electroplating.The utility of dithionates in electroplating is demonstrated with examples. It is well known that dithionic acid disproportionates in strong acid solution, but this does not preclude the use of metal dithionates and even of dithionic acid under the right circumstances.
