The subsolidus phase relations for the ternary system, BiO1.5YbO1.5-CuO, are investigated by the powder X-ray diffraction method. The system can be divided into six three-phase regions and three two-phase regions. There exist two solid solutions Bi1-xYbxO1.5 (0.05 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35) and Yb1-xBixO1.5 (x less than or equal to 0.02). The former solution exhibits a tetragonal structure with 0.05 less than or equal to x <0.15 which is isostructural to beta-BiO1.5, while a cubic structure with 0.15 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35 is isostructural to delta-BiO1.5. A new compound with the composition close to Yb12Bi12CuOy. is found. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
