Sm0.88Dy0.12Fe2 rod composites were fabricated under a compaction pressure of 800 MPa along the rod direction and in a magnetic field of 200 kA/m along the direction, perpendicular to the rod axis. It is found that the magnetostriction lambda(parallel to) parallel to the rod direction is almost unchanged with increasing the compressive stress up to 20 MPa and shows a large unsaturated magnetostriction value of -620 x 10(-6) at 600 kA/m. The magnetostriction lambda(perpendicular to) perpendicular to rod axis increases with increasing the compressive stress when the magnetic field is larger than 300 kA/m. The variation of the magnetostriction and magnetization with compressive stress has been discussed. This result is very important to application of Sm-Dy-Fe composites.
