The isothermal oxidation behaviors of two nickel-based directionally solidified superalloys with almost similar compositions were studied at 1,050 degrees C. The oxidation kinetics, oxide phases, and morphology of the oxide scales were investigated. The results show that the oxidation behaviors were related to the size of the gamma' phase. The alloy with uniform finer gamma' particles had better oxidation resistance than that with coarse ones. During the oxidation, precipitation of the mu phase was detrimental to the oxidation resistance of the nickel-based superalloys.
