The abrasive wear behaviour of discontinuous SiC (SiC whiskers, SiC particulates and SiC short fibers) reinforced 6061Al composites has been investigated using a pin-on-disk machine. The results show that the composites exhibit excellent abrasive resistance compared with the unreinforced matrix alloy. The abrasive resistance of the composites containing SiC fibers is an order of magnitude greater than that of the matrix alloy. The abrasive resistance of the composites is mainly dependent on the type of reinforcement, and is also related to the properties of the matrix alloy. The abrasive rate of the composites aged to peak hardness is the lowest. The agglomeration of SiC whiskers or particulates obviously deteriorated the abrasive resistance of the composite.
