The phase transformation, structure and magnetic properties of mechanically alloyed (MA) Pr10Fe82-xVxB8, Pr10Fe76V6+yB8-y, and Pr10-zNdzFe76V13B1 alloys and their nitrides have been studied. With increasing V content, the magnetic main phase in the Pr10Fe76V6+yB8-y series changes from the Pr2Fe14B-type phase via a metastable Pr(Fe,V, B)(7) phase with TbCu7-type structure to Pr(Fe,V, B)(12) phase with ThMn12-type structure. After nitrogenation, the easy magnetization of Pr(Fe,V, B)(7) and Pr(Fe,V, B)(12) phases changes from easy in-plane to easy c-axis, and their Curie temperatures are greatly enhanced, due to the entrance of nitrogen into the interstitial sites. In the Pr10-zNdzFe76V13B1 series, the substitution of Nd for Pr gradually leads to the complete formation of (Pr, Nd)(Fe,V, B)(12) phase with ThMn12-type structure and the disappearance of alpha-Fe. The coercivity of the Pr10-zNdzFe76V13B1Ndelta alloys is drastically enhanced by Nd substitution. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
