Abstract: Laser shock forming (LSF) is a new technique realized by applying an impulsive pressure generated by laser-induced shock wave on the surface of sheet metal. LSF of sheet metal is investigated with experiment and numerical simulation in this paper, the basic theories are introduced, the surface quality and deformation of the processed Titanium sample (TA2) are examined; ABAQUS is used to simulate laser shock forming and the central displacement of the shocked region is measured and compared with the simulation. Overlapped LSF treatment is experimentally carried out to produce groove and simulated. The results show the surface quality and the microstructure with single laser pulse have no remarkable change and ablation is observed on the surface of the sample with overlapped pulses. The deformation of the simulation agrees with the experiment quite well.
