The effects of forced flow induced by an electromagnetic field on cooling curves and Si phase morphology of centrifugally cast Al-Si hypoeutectic alloy have been investigated in detail. The results show that the forced flow induced by the electromagnetic field during centrifugal solidification promotes the nucleation of new grains and the evolution of latent heat, thus it markedly prolongs the solidification time and decreases the cooling rate when the melt temperature is below the liquidus temperature. In addition, the forced flow causes a large number of mechanical twins formed in the Si phase and thus gives rise to a considerable branching in the eutectic Si phase.
