Dislocation core structures in metals and ceramics are long-standing questions in materials research. Detailed knowledge about core structure of screw dislocations remains a major challenge. We have designed and synthesized a novel HfAl4C4 ceramic with a large c axis and vast difference in atomic numbers, in which a c[0001] screw dislocation is directly observed with dislocation line perpendicular to the viewing direction by STEM. This observation has cast a new light on revealing the detailed core structure of screw dislocations.
