Poly(vinyl formal) cellular plastics(PVFM) modified by melamine was prepared. The preparation of PVFM and the effect of the melamine amount on the properties were investigated. The formation of the modified material was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).The thermal property was determined by thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), derivative thermogravimetry analysis(DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).By adding of 7.5% melamine, the tensile strength is 1.96 MPa, which is 200% higher than that of the material in the absence of melamine. The onset thermal decomposition temperature is 322.5 ℃, which is 81.6 ℃ higher than that of the origin PVFM.Melamine has obvious effect on the tensile strength and the thermal stability of PVFM.
