Working substance has a great influence on the performance of a thermoacoustic engine (TE).CO_2 was used as working substance to further increase the pressure amplitude of a TE and reduce its frequency. The internal acoustic field, pressure and frequency characteristics of a TE with N_2 and CO_2 were predicted by calculation.Experimental verification was also made.Good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is obtained. With CO_2,the pressure ratio and pressure amplitude of the TE reach 1.3 and 0.222 MPa,and the frequency decreases to 18 Hz.Compared with N_2,the pressure amplitude performance of the TE with CO_2 is improved.
