The effect of the Ni addition to the thermal and mechanical properties in Mg65Cu20Ag5Gd10 was investigated. Ni element has high elastic modulus and low GIB ratio, where G is shear modulus and B is bulk modulus. With the increase of Ni addition, glass transition temperature Tg increases almost monolithically from 418.6 K for Mg65Cu20Ag5Gd10 to 428.1 K for Mg65Cu12.5 Ag5Gd10Ni7.5, and 427.5 K for Mg(65)Cu(10)Ag5Gd(10)Ni(10). Compressive fracture stress increases monolithically from 820 MPa for Mg65Cu20Ag5Gd10 to 1005 MPa with the Ni addition increases to 10%. With the Ni addition, both glass transition temperature T-g and compressive fracture stress a increase. Selecting alloy addition from the viewpoint of elastic constants shows some encouraging results. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
