This paper reports a new method for the preparation of bulk metallic glass. A fragment of cast Pd40Ni40P20 alloy was put into a Belt anvil high-pressure cell, and a bulk metallic glass with the size up to 4.0 mm in diameter was obtained by applying pressure of 5.5 GPa. The cooling rate used for the melt quenching was as low as 10 K/s under pressure. Samples were examined by using X-ray diffraction and differential thermal amalysis(DTA) to confirm whether they are of vitrification or not. The microstructures of the sample were observed by using a scanning electron microscope and an optical microscope. The effect of pressure on the kinetics of crystal nucleation and growth is also investigated.
