A theoretical method for studying the optical spectra and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters of Yb(3+) ions in SrWO(4) crystal is presented. Using the crystal-field theory, the formulas relating the optical spectra and EPR parameters are derived. Based on the theoretical formulas, the 14 x 14 full energy matrices for 4f(13) configuration ions in a D(2d) point symmetry are constructed. By diagonalizing the full energy matrices, the optical spectra and EPR data of Yb(3+) in SrWO(4) crystal have been investigated. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental values. Furthermore, the crystal-field parameters for SrWO(4) have been determined in this work.
